Period delay treatment allows you to temporarily postpone your period by taking a type of hormone medicine. This can be useful if your period is due at an inconvenient time, such as during a holiday, sports event, exam, or special occasion.
Period delay medicines do not stop your periods altogether but delay them until you finish the course of tablets.
Medicines such as norethisterone and medroxyprogesterone are synthetic versions of the hormone progesterone. During a normal cycle, falling levels of progesterone trigger the womb lining to shed, leading to a period. By taking these medicines, hormone levels are kept high, which prevents the period from starting. Once you stop the tablets, your period usually begins within a few days.
Period delay tablets are not a method of contraception. You can still get pregnant if you have unprotected sex, so additional contraception such as condoms should be used if needed.
Period delay tablets are commonly used when a period would be disruptive or difficult to manage, such as when travelling, attending a wedding, going on holiday, or competing in sports. Some people also use them for religious or cultural reasons.
Treatment can usually postpone a period for up to two to three weeks, depending on when you start the tablets and how long you take them for. Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions based on your cycle.
You should not use period delay medicines if you are pregnant, have certain medical conditions such as liver disease, or a history of blood clots, unless advised by a doctor.
Our service can provide norethisterone and medroxyprogesterone for period delay in adults who are suitable for treatment. These medicines are taken as daily tablets, starting a few days before your period is due.
Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine before starting treatment. If you develop sudden breathlessness, chest pain, severe headache, vision changes, or swelling in one leg, you should seek urgent medical help immediately via NHS 111, your GP, or A&E, as these may be signs of a blood clot or other serious reaction. If your period does not return after stopping treatment, you should take a pregnancy test and contact your doctor.
