Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the normal flora of the vaginal region. Vaginal discharges are characteristic, and such discharges range from thin to greyish-white. The discharges have a smell similar to fish. However, some women will remain asymptomatic while BV is irritating and may present with other problems.

The causes of BV include a shift in the pH of the vaginal environment, a history of having multiple sexual partners, douching, or hygiene products. Fortunately, BV is easily treatable if the appropriate medicine is administered. Bacterial vaginosis is usually treated with a short course of antibiotics, most commonly metronidazole or clindamycin, available as tablets or a vaginal gel/cream.
