Bacterial Vaginosis
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection that can cause unusual discharge, odor, and discomfort. While usually not serious, prompt treatment can relieve symptoms, restore natural balance, and help prevent complications. Good hygiene and avoiding irritants can support recovery and reduce the risk of recurrence.
Through 123Meds, you can receive expert-approved treatments for bacterial vaginosis via our UK-registered online pharmacy service, with prescriptions reviewed by clinicians and delivered discreetly straight to your door.

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the normal flora of the vaginal region. Vaginal discharges are characteristic, and such discharges range from thin to greyish-white. The discharges have a smell similar to fish. However, some women will remain asymptomatic while BV is irritating and may present with other problems.
The causes of BV include a shift in the pH of the vaginal environment, a history of having multiple sexual partners, douching, or hygiene products. Fortunately, BV is easily treatable if the appropriate medicine is administered. At our pharmacy, we offer effective solutions, such as Metronidazole 400mg, which will aid in the management and eradication of this condition.
The vagina naturally contains a balance of different bacteria (the vaginal microbiome). BV occurs when this balance is disrupted, leading to an overgrowth of certain bacteria.
Risk Factors for BV:
- Recent antibiotic use
- Douching (washing inside the vagina with water or soaps)
- New sexual partner
- Washing underwear with strong detergents
- Multiple sexual partners
- Smoking
- Using perfumed soaps, shower gels, or bubble baths
- Having an intrauterine device (IUD) for contraception
While BV is not classed as an STI, it can sometimes be passed between female sexual partners.
Around half of women with BV don’t experience any symptoms. When symptoms do appear, the most common is a strong, fishy-smelling vaginal discharge, often more noticeable after sex.
The discharge is typically thin, grey or white, and watery. BV usually doesn’t cause itching, irritation, or pain when urinating.
For more information on vaginal infections or sexual health, visit the NHS website.
Bacterial vaginosis is usually treated with a short course of antibiotics, most commonly metronidazole or clindamycin, available as tablets or a vaginal gel/cream.
At 123Meds, our clinicians can prescribe:
- Zidoval Gel (metronidazole) – inserted into the vagina at bedtime for 5 days. Avoid alcohol during treatment.
- Dalacin Cream (clindamycin) – applied vaginally at bedtime for 7 days.
Both are effective at restoring the natural balance of vaginal bacteria.
Important: Please let us know on the online form if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, as this may affect your treatment options.
Preventing BV Recurrence
BV can return, but the following tips may help reduce the risk:
- Avoid perfumed soaps, shower gels, and vaginal deodorants
- Wash underwear in mild detergent
- Use plain soap and water for intimate washing
- Prefer showers over baths
- Avoid smoking
If you’ve had BV recently, please include this in your online consultation to help us choose the most suitable treatment.
Can BV go away on its own?
BV can sometimes clear without treatment, but if you have symptoms, antibiotics are usually needed. If you don’t have symptoms, treatment may not be required.
What causes BV?
BV occurs when the natural balance of vaginal bacteria is disrupted. An overgrowth of Gardnerella vaginalis reduces healthy lactobacilli, leading to BV symptoms.
What does BV smell like?
The most common symptom is a fishy-smelling vaginal discharge, often more noticeable after sex.
How can I get rid of the smell?
Treating the BV with antibiotics is the most effective way to eliminate the odour and other symptoms.
What are the treatments for BV?
BV is treated with metronidazole or clindamycin, available as tablets, gels, or creams. At 123Meds, our doctors can prescribe:
- Zidoval Gel (metronidazole)
- Dalacin Cream (clindamycin)
Both are applied vaginally and help restore the natural balance of bacteria.
