An allergic reaction happens when your immune system overreacts to something harmless, such as certain foods, insect stings, or medicines. Reactions can range from mild (like hives or itching) to severe.

Anaphylaxis is the most serious type of allergic reaction. It can develop quickly and affect the whole body, causing swelling, difficulty breathing, or a drop in blood pressure. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency and always needs immediate treatment with an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen or similar).

Anaphylaxis is usually triggered by allergens such as peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, milk, eggs, insect stings, or certain medicines like antibiotics. Some people are diagnosed with anaphylaxis after specialist testing by an allergy clinic.

Because it can be life-threatening, anyone diagnosed with anaphylaxis should always carry two adrenaline auto-injectors.

Anaphylaxis often starts within minutes of exposure. Symptoms may include swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, sudden hoarseness, wheezing, dizziness, or collapse. Skin symptoms such as hives or redness may also appear.

If you ever think you are experiencing anaphylaxis, use your EpiPen immediately and call 999. Do not wait to see if symptoms improve on their own.

The only emergency treatment for anaphylaxis is adrenaline, given by an auto-injector such as an EpiPen, Jext or Emerade. After using your injector, you must call 999 for an ambulance, as symptoms can return and further treatment may be needed in hospital.

People who have already been diagnosed with anaphylaxis are advised to:

Always carry two auto-injectors with them
Make sure friends, family and colleagues know how to use them
Check expiry dates and replace pens before they run out

Our service can provide repeat supplies of an EpiPen for patients who have already been diagnosed by a doctor or allergy specialist. We cannot provide initial diagnosis or emergency treatment.

Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your injector.

If you use your pen, call 999 immediately. If you are unsure whether to use it, it is safer to use it and seek urgent help.

Frequently asked questions
  • What is an allergic reaction?

An allergic reaction happens when your immune system overreacts to a harmless substance such as certain foods, insect stings, medicines, or latex. Symptoms can include hives, itching, swelling of the lips or face, stomach pain, nausea, or breathing difficulties. Reactions can range from mild to severe.

  • What is anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that develops quickly. Symptoms may include swelling of the tongue and throat, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or collapse. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment with adrenaline (epinephrine).

  • Who needs an EpiPen?

People at risk of severe allergic reactions should carry an adrenaline auto-injector such as an EpiPen. This includes those with a history of anaphylaxis, severe food allergies (such as peanuts, tree nuts, or shellfish), insect venom allergy, or certain medicine allergies.

  • How does an EpiPen work?

An EpiPen delivers a single dose of adrenaline, which helps reverse the symptoms of anaphylaxis by relaxing the airways, reducing swelling, and supporting blood pressure. It should be used immediately at the first signs of a severe reaction. After using an EpiPen, you must still call 999 for urgent medical care.

  • What should I do if I have a severe allergic reaction?

If you experience symptoms of anaphylaxis, use your EpiPen straight away and call 999. Lie down with your legs raised if possible, unless this makes breathing more difficult. If symptoms do not improve after five minutes, a second dose may be required. Always seek emergency medical help even if symptoms appear to improve after using adrenaline.
