There are many possible causes. Sports injuries and overuse are common triggers, especially when the muscles or joints are strained beyond their usual limits. Everyday activities such as lifting heavy objects or sitting with poor posture can also cause pain. Arthritis, which leads to inflammation and stiffness in the joints, is another frequent cause, particularly in older adults. In many cases, the pain is temporary and improves with rest, simple treatments, and time.

The symptoms depend on the area affected but often include aching, stiffness, swelling, or tenderness around the muscles and joints. You may also notice reduced movement or pain that worsens with activity. Sports injuries can cause sudden, sharp pain and swelling, while arthritis pain usually develops gradually and may feel worse in the morning or after periods of rest.

You should seek urgent medical advice if pain is severe, if there is significant swelling or deformity of the joint, if you cannot put weight on the limb, or if the pain is associated with fever, redness, or sudden unexplained swelling. These may be signs of a more serious problem such as a fracture or infection.

Most musculoskeletal pain can be managed with a combination of self-care and medicines. Resting the affected area, applying ice or heat, and gently supporting the joint can help reduce discomfort. Stretching and physiotherapy may be recommended to aid recovery and prevent future injuries.

Medicines are often used to control pain and inflammation. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen reduce swelling and ease pain. For localised pain, anti-inflammatory gels such as Voltarol can be applied directly to the affected area. These treatments can provide effective relief from sports injuries, sprains, and mild arthritis-related pain.

If symptoms do not improve after a week, or if the pain keeps coming back, you should contact your GP for further assessment. If you experience severe pain with fever, sudden swelling, or you cannot move the affected joint, you should seek urgent help from NHS 111, your GP, or A&E.
