What is Zidoval 7.5mg/g?

It is a prescription vaginal gel that the medicine uses in treating bacterial vaginosis in women. This medicine is an antibiotic within the class of nitroimidazoles, and it kills specific dangerous bacteria. With its active ingredient, Metronidazole, Zidoval delivers its dose right to the affected area, so it is very likely that this will remove the bacterial overgrowth there. It brings back the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina.

What is Zidoval Used For?

It is mostly used in treating bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is one of the infection types caused by an imbalance of the natural balance of the flora of the usually existing bacteria inside the vagina. The condition usually manifests itself through peculiar discharge coming from the vagina; it is described as having an odd, fishy odor and has an associated degree of inflammation and itchiness. It works by readjusting the balance of helpful bacteria and reduces the symptoms thus alleviating the infection.

How Zidoval Works

Zidoval has Metronidazole, a powerful antibiotic that destroys the anaerobic bacteria that cause bacterial vaginosis. Anaerobes thrive under low oxygen levels. Metronidazole action will inhibit these anaerobes' growth and multiplication and re-establish the normal environment in the vagina.

Mechanism of Action:

Inhibits DNA Synthesis: The active constituent, Metronidazole in Zidoval, works by inhibiting the DNA replication of bacteria. Thus, in the absence of their multiplication and spread, the infection at the source is prevented due to the pathogenic bacteria.
Restores Vaginal Balance: It assists in rebalancing at the vaginal level through the reduction or decline of undesirable harmful flora, and it facilitates the growth of beneficial bacteria like lactobacilli. It is most important regarding the prevention of the recurrence of BV.
Anti-inflammatory Effects: Besides bactericidal activity, Metronidazole is also mildly anti-inflammatory. This can help alleviate irritation and inflammation in the vagina, making treatment easier to bear.
Local Treatment: Being a topical treatment, Zidoval's effect is localized; systemic absorption is also minimized. This reduces the possibility of adverse effects compared with oral antibiotics.

When is Bacterial Vaginosis Confirmed, and Medication Needed?

Unusual vaginal discharge with a strong fishy smell, often noticeable after sexual activity.
Thin, watery discharge that may appear white or grey.

Unlike other infections, BV does not typically cause itching or soreness. Additionally, around half of women with BV may not experience any symptoms at all.

Zidoval gel is specifically designed to treat bacterial vaginosis and is not effective against other vaginal infections, such as thrush or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Physical Causes of BV:

Lack of proper vaginal flora, usually as the result of an imbalance of beneficial lactobacilli.
Douching can introduce detrimental bacteria.
Hormonal changes that upset the pH balance of the vagina.

Symptoms of BV:

Thin and greyish-white vaginal discharge
The vagina emits a heavy, fishy odor, especially postcoital.
The vagina may itch or burn.

Therefore, if symptoms persist, it is suggested to seek a doctor and get treatment.

Healthcare professionals diagnose BV based on the symptoms of the patient and sometimes take a vaginal swab to confirm the condition. Treatment may include prescription antibiotics such as Zidoval 7.5mg/g, which is a metronidazole gel applied directly to the vagina to kill the excessive bacteria. Other medications or lifestyle changes may also be suggested according to the person's situation. A consultation with a doctor will help you decide on the best treatment.

Can Zidoval 7.5mg/g Be Purchased Over the Counter?

Zidoval 7.5mg/g is a prescription medicine in the UK. It cannot, though, be bought over the counter. It is mainly used to treat BV. The prescription can only be given based on the proper diagnosis by a healthcare provider. This would ascertain the appropriateness of the medicine for the disease being treated and reduce side effects. Self-medication without consulting the physician can lead the patient to misuse the gel by either wrong usage or undesirable effects of the same.

Alternative Medications

There are some prescription medicines that can be prescribed for bacterial vaginosis treatment other than Zidoval.

Metronidazole Tablets: This is an oral alternative to Zidoval. It is usually taken twice a day for a week. It is a systemic treatment for bacterial vaginosis.
Clindamycin Cream (Dalacin): This is a topical antibiotic cream used in the treatment of BV. It is similar to Zidoval and is applied intravaginally.
Secnidazole (Solosec): It is a new, single-dose oral antibiotic that acts on anaerobic bacteria causing BV. It is convenient for the patient who prefers fewer doses.
Tinidazole Tablets: It is an oral antibiotic similar to Metronidazole, used in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, known for its good tolerability and shorter treatment course.

All these medicines should be taken only under the guidance of an expert healthcare professional to make sure that individuals get secure and effective cures. Proper medical evaluation goes a long way in determining the right option for cases.

Zidoval Gel Alternatives

The two primary antibiotics used to treat bacterial vaginosis are:

  • Metronidazole (Zidoval gel): Apply once daily for 5 days.
  • Clindamycin (Dalacin cream): Apply once daily for 7 days.

Timing: Apply Zidoval 7.5mg/g topically once at night before bed. This allows the medicine to stay in contact with the area for a longer period, giving it enough time to act on the bacteria causing the infectious condition with minimal chance of leaking throughout the day.

Dosage: The usual therapy involves the application of one applicator full of Zidoval gel containing 5g, which is administered every morning for five consecutive days. Always follow the recommended dosage and length of time advised by your doctor. Never increase the dosage beyond what is prescribed, nor extend the duration more than that advised without consulting a health care provider first.

With Food: Food should not interfere with Zidoval; however, not causing irritation during the treatment period by maintaining good personal hygiene and limiting the use of highly fragrant products is believed to enhance healing.

Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol should be avoided during the time of taking Zidoval. The interaction of alcohol with the active ingredient, Metronidazole, may cause nausea, vomiting, or stomach cramps. Avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours after the completion of the course of Zidoval.

Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, you can apply Zidoval when you remember. If it is close to the time of your next application, you just skip that missed application and continue with your schedule. Do not apply twice the dose to make up for the missed application.

Always follow your doctor's advice closely to ensure that you treat the ailment effectively and avoid any side effects.

Active Ingredient:

The active ingredient of Zidoval is Metronidazole, which is 7.5mg per gram of gel. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that kills and eradicates the bad bacteria causing bacterial vaginosis in order to bring back the normal flora of the vagina.

Inactive Ingredients:

Other inactive ingredients in Zidoval include carbomer, propylene glycol, edetate disodium, sodium hydroxide, and purified water. These contribute to giving the gel a texture, stability, and ease of application so that the medicine will adequately reach the infected area.

Always read the patient information leaflet (PIL) in your pack for the complete list of ingredients, and to check for any you might be allergic to.

This gel is tolerable and fairly safe for most women. However, as with any medicine, the side effects cannot be absolutely ruled out. Most of these are mild and temporary but more serious and call for further medical treatment in others.

Common Side Effects:

Vaginal Irritation: The feeling of slight burning or itching in the vaginal area
