Unlike Wegovy®, which contains semaglutide, Mounjaro® contains tirzepatide. Although both medicines are highly effective prescription weight loss treatments that help reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness, they work differently within the body. For this reason, there is no direct dose equivalence when switching between the two treatments.

What Dose Will I Start On?

Because Mounjaro® and Wegovy® Pill contain different active ingredients, there is no fixed dose conversion between the two medicines.

Your current Mounjaro® dose.
How long you've been receiving treatment.
Your response to treatment and weight loss achieved.
Any side effects you've experienced.
Your medical history and any other medicines you take.

Depending on your individual circumstances, you may not need to restart treatment at the lowest Wegovy® Pill dose. Patients who have been established on Mounjaro® and are tolerating treatment well may be suitable to begin Wegovy® Pill at a higher dose where clinically appropriate.

Things to Consider Before Switching

Clinical studies have shown that Mounjaro® has demonstrated greater average weight loss than semaglutide-based treatments, with average weight loss of up to 21% when combined with diet and lifestyle changes. Wegovy® Pill has demonstrated average weight loss of approximately 14–17% in clinical studies.

However, the treatment associated with the greatest average weight loss is not always the most appropriate choice. Convenience, tolerability, side effects, lifestyle, personal preference and long-term treatment adherence are all important factors when selecting the right medication.

Wegovy® Pill may be particularly suitable for patients who value the convenience of a once-daily tablet or would prefer not to continue with weekly injections.

Wegovy® Pill contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist developed by Novo Nordisk. It is the tablet version of Wegovy®, providing an alternative to weekly injections for adults living with overweight or obesity.

Semaglutide works by mimicking glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a naturally occurring hormone involved in appetite regulation. By acting on areas of the brain that control hunger and satiety, Wegovy® Pill can help reduce appetite, increase feelings of fullness, and support lower calorie intake.

Clinical studies from the OASIS programme demonstrated significant weight loss when oral semaglutide was used alongside dietary and lifestyle changes. In the OASIS 4 trial, participants achieved average weight loss of approximately 14% regardless of treatment continuation, and around 17% among those who remained on treatment throughout the study.

Wegovy® Pill is licensed for adults who:

Common side effects may include:

Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Constipation

These side effects are generally similar to those seen with injectable semaglutide treatments and are often most noticeable when treatment is first started or the dose is increased. In many cases, symptoms improve as your body adjusts to treatment.

It is important to stay well hydrated, particularly if you experience vomiting or diarrhoea, as dehydration can increase the risk of complications.

You should contact your GP, pharmacist, or NHS 111 if side effects are severe, persistent, or causing concern. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience severe or persistent abdominal pain, signs of dehydration, symptoms of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or any other serious or unexpected symptoms.

Wegovy® Pill should be taken exactly as prescribed by your clinician.

To ensure the medicine is absorbed properly:

Take one tablet once daily.
Take the tablet immediately after waking up.
Swallow the tablet whole with a small amount of plain water (up to 120ml).
Do not split, crush, or chew the tablet.
Do not eat, drink, or take any other oral medicines for at least 30 minutes after taking your dose.
