What is Sumatriptan (Generic Imigran) used for?

Sumatriptan is a prescription medicine used to treat migraine attacks, with or without aura. It works best when taken at the first sign of a migraine. It is not designed to prevent migraines or reduce how often they occur.

How does Sumatriptan work?

Sumatriptan belongs to a group of medicines called triptans. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the brain and reducing the activity of certain pain pathways. This helps to relieve headache, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound during a migraine attack.

When to consider Sumatriptan

You may be prescribed sumatriptan if:

You have been diagnosed with migraine by a doctor.
Over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol have not provided enough relief.
You need fast-acting relief during acute migraine attacks.

Who can use Sumatriptan

Adults aged 18–65 who have been diagnosed with migraines and have been assessed as suitable by a prescriber.

Who should not use Sumatriptan

Do not use if you:

Have heart disease, angina, uncontrolled high blood pressure, circulation problems, or a history of stroke or TIA.
Take other triptan medicines or ergotamine for migraines.
Are allergic to sumatriptan or any of the ingredients.
Are under 18 or over 65 years old.
Always let your prescriber know about any other health conditions and medicines you take.

Possible side effects

Common side effects include tiredness, dizziness, flushing, tingling, or feelings of pressure in the chest, arms, or legs. Nausea and drowsiness may also occur. Rarely, chest pain or changes in heart rhythm can happen. Seek urgent medical help if you develop severe chest pain, breathing problems, or signs of an allergic reaction.

Alternative treatments for migraine

Other triptans include rizatriptan, zolmitriptan, and naratriptan. Non-triptan options include over-the-counter pain relief (paracetamol, ibuprofen, aspirin) or preventive medicines prescribed by a doctor for frequent migraines.

Can you buy Sumatriptan over the counter?

In the UK, Sumatriptan 50 mg is available without a prescription under the brand name Imigran Recovery (sometimes also called Imigran Relief) but only for adults aged 18 to 65 who have a confirmed doctor’s diagnosis of migraine. Stronger doses and other forms (100 mg tablets, nasal spray, injection) are still prescription-only.

Directions for Use

Take at the first sign of a migraine

Swallow one tablet whole with water as soon as your migraine headache starts.
Do not take it during the aura phase (the warning signs before the headache), unless your prescriber has told you to.

Usual dose

Adults (18–65 years): one 50 mg tablet is the standard starting dose.
Some people may be prescribed 100 mg if 50 mg is not effective.

If the migraine improves but comes back

You may take a second tablet if the migraine returns.
Wait at least 2 hours after the first dose before taking another.
Do not take more than 300 mg in 24 hours.

If the first dose doesn’t work

Do not take another dose for the same attack.
You may use sumatriptan again for a future migraine.

How often to use

Use only for acute migraine attacks.

Do not take every day or to prevent migraines.

Important to know

If your migraine does not improve after taking sumatriptan, or if your symptoms are unusual or severe, seek medical advice.

Always follow the instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist, as your dose may be adjusted to suit you.
