What they do
Sodium cromoglicate eye drops are used to relieve eye symptoms caused by seasonal allergies such as hay fever. They help with itching, redness, burning, and watering of the eyes.
How they work
They belong to a group of medicines called mast cell stabilisers. They prevent the release of histamine and other chemicals that trigger allergic reactions in the eyes. By controlling this response, the drops reduce irritation and discomfort.
Who can use them
Adults and children can usually use sodium cromoglicate eye drops. They are often recommended for people with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis. Always check the product packaging for the specific age limits and follow medical advice if giving to children.
Who can’t use them
You should not use these drops if you are allergic to sodium cromoglicate or any of the other ingredients. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you wear contact lenses, as some formulations may contain preservatives that can affect the lenses. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should check with their doctor before using.
How they are used
Wash your hands before use.
Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid.
Place one or two drops into the affected eye(s) up to four times daily, or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface.
If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in.
How they are stored
Keep in the original packaging, away from heat and direct sunlight.
Store at room temperature unless the packaging states otherwise.
Once opened, most bottles should be discarded after 4 weeks. Always check the label for the expiry after opening.
Keep out of the reach of children.
Alternative treatments
Antihistamine eye drops (such as olopatadine or ketotifen) for faster symptom relief.
Oral antihistamines (such as cetirizine or loratadine) if you have other allergy symptoms like sneezing or nasal congestion.
Decongestant eye drops may reduce redness but are not recommended for long-term use.
Lifestyle measures such as staying indoors when pollen counts are high, using wraparound sunglasses, or rinsing eyes with saline can also help.
