What is Otomize Ear Spray?

Otomize Ear Spray is a prescription-only medicine used to treat outer ear infections, also called otitis externa or “swimmer’s ear.” It contains three active ingredients: neomycin sulfate (an antibiotic), dexamethasone (a corticosteroid), and acetic acid (which helps restore the natural acidity of the ear canal). Together, these target the bacteria causing infection, reduce inflammation, and relieve discomfort.

How Does Otomize Ear Spray Work?

• Neomycin sulfate kills the bacteria responsible for the infection.
• Dexamethasone reduces inflammation, swelling, and redness inside the ear canal.
• Acetic acid makes the environment in the ear less suitable for bacteria and fungi to grow.

Symptoms of Ear Infection

Who should not use Otomize ear spray

Do not use this spray if you:

- Are allergic to neomycin, dexamethasone, acetic acid, or any ingredients in the medicine
- Have a perforated eardrum (hole in the eardrum)
- Have a viral or fungal ear infection that has not been assessed by a doctor
- A grommet in place (also known as a patent grommet)
- If you have any other ear or hearing-related conditions, you should speak to a specialist before using this treatment.

Otomize should not be used long-term. Prolonged use of corticosteroids (such as dexamethasone) may lead to unwanted side effects.

This medication is for use in the ear only. Do not swallow or inhale the spray, and always follow the instructions provided in the patient information leaflet.

If you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before using Otomize.

Otomize should not be used more than three times per year. If you experience frequent ear infections, consult your GP to rule out any underlying problems.

Please be aware that overuse—particularly if sprayed into damaged or open areas of the ear—may lead to hearing problems. Long-term or excessive use of corticosteroids can also increase the risk of eye conditions, including central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC).

Alternative Treatment Options

Other antibiotic ear drops or sprays, such as those containing ciprofloxacin or gentamicin.
Acidic ear drops (acetic acid alone) for mild cases.
Pain relief with oral painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Avoiding water in the affected ear during recovery (for example, while swimming or showering).

Can Otomize Ear Spray Be Purchased Over the Counter?

No. Otomize is only available on prescription in the UK. A healthcare professional must confirm the diagnosis of an ear infection and check that the treatment is safe and appropriate before prescribing.

• Acetic acid 2%

Using Otomize Spray – Key Steps:

• Shake the bottle well before each use
• Prime the pump by spraying a few times until a fine mist appears
• One spray = one dose
• Gently insert the nozzle into the affected ear
• Spray one dose into the ear, three times a day
• If you forget a dose, use it as soon as you remember
• Continue using the spray for 48 hours after symptoms have resolved

Only use this medication in the ears. Do not apply it anywhere else on the body.
