- Duraphat 5000 ppm Fluoride Toothpaste...
What is Duraphat Toothpaste?
Duraphat toothpaste is a high-fluoride prescription toothpaste used to prevent tooth decay (dental caries) in people at higher risk of cavities.
It contains sodium fluoride — either 2800 ppm or 5000 ppm.
Duraphat strengthens enamel, helps repair early signs of decay, and provides extra protection compared to regular toothpaste. It’s available on prescription from dentists, GPs, or online through registered UK pharmacies.
What is Duraphat Toothpaste Used For?
Preventing tooth decay (dental caries) in adults and teenagers aged 16+ who are at increased risk
Protecting enamel for people with exposed roots, dental erosion, or dry mouth
Supporting ongoing dental care for those with braces, crowns, or gum recession
How Does Duraphat Work?
Fluoride binds to the tooth surface and strengthens enamel, making it more resistant to acid attack from food and bacteria.
It can also help reverse early decay by promoting remineralisation of weakened enamel.
Duraphat contains more fluoride than standard toothpaste (which usually contains 1350–1500 ppm), giving enhanced protection for vulnerable teeth.
Who Should Use It?
Those advised by a dentist or healthcare professional to use a high-fluoride toothpaste.
Who Should Not Use It?
Children under 18 years old.
People allergic to sodium fluoride or any ingredients in the toothpaste
Anyone already using other high-fluoride products without dental supervision.
Can I Buy Duraphat Over the Counter?
No- Duraphat toothpaste is available on prescription only in the UK.
However, it can be supplied through registered online pharmacies after a clinician reviews your suitability.
Alternative Toothpastes
Standard fluoride toothpaste (1350–1500 ppm) for general use
Fluoride mouth rinses for additional protection (used separately, not at the same time as Duraphat)
Ask your dentist or pharmacist which is most appropriate for you.
How to Use Duraphat Toothpaste:
Brush your teeth three times daily, ideally after meals.
Use a 2 cm strip of toothpaste each time (about the length of a toothbrush head).
Brush thoroughly for 2–3 minutes, then spit out the excess.
Do not swallow and avoid rinsing with water straight after brushing — this keeps fluoride on the teeth for longer.
Continue using as directed by your dentist.
If you accidentally swallow large amounts or feel unwell after use, contact NHS 111 or your GP for advice.
Active ingredient: Sodium fluoride (either 2800 ppm or 5000 ppm fluoride ion)
Other ingredients (excipients): Silica, sorbitol, glycerol, sodium lauryl sulfate, carmellose sodium, flavouring, titanium dioxide, and water.
Always read the patient information leaflet (PIL) included in the pack for the full ingredient list and any allergy warnings.
Most people tolerate Duraphat well, but possible side effects include:
Temporary mouth irritation or soreness
Mild burning or taste changes
Rarely, allergic reactions (rash, swelling, mouth ulcers)
If any severe reaction occurs, such as swelling of the mouth, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing, stop using the toothpaste and seek emergency help (999/A&E).
For persistent irritation, contact your dentist, pharmacist, or NHS 111 for guidance.
