How to use Differin Cream

Differin Gel 0.1% is typically applied to the affected area in the evening after cleansing your face.

When washing your face, use warm water and an oil-free acne cleanser for best results. Gently pat your skin dry to minimise irritation. Once dry, apply a thin layer of Differin evenly over the affected areas using your fingertips.

This treatment is not recommended for children under 12.

Follow these steps to achieve better results with the Differin Cream:

Cleansing your skin: Always begin with washing the face with gentle cleanser; remove all kinds of dirt, oils, or makeup on it. Wipe your face clean with a dry towel.
Application of thin layer: Place just a pea size amount of the Differin Cream/gel onto the tip of the finger and use it as a thin layer upon the affected parts of the body.
Even Distribution: Spread the cream to the skin thinly while avoiding sensitive areas such as the eyes, lips, and mouth.
Application at Night: The Differin Cream is applied once daily, ideally at night. Applying at night helps one avoid such sensitivities during the day.
Don't Overapply: Do not use more cream than needed. A small amount is just enough for the treatment area.

Differin anti-acne gel, like many acne treatments, may take between four to six weeks before noticeable improvements appear. A review with your doctor is recommended after 12 weeks of use.

The effectiveness of Differin varies from person to person. If you don’t see significant results after six weeks, consult your GP about alternative treatments. There are combination therapies that may be better suited to your skin.

Stop using the cream and seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe side effects.

  • Is Differin Safe During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding?

No. Although only a small amount of adapalene (the active ingredient in Differin) is absorbed through the skin, this treatment should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

For alternative acne treatments during pregnancy or breastfeeding, see the options below or consult your doctor for personalised advice.

  • How long does it take to see results from Differin Cream?

You may notice improvements in your skin within 2 to 4 weeks after regular use. However, the best results will be noticed after about 8 to 12 weeks when the skin is visibly changed. Keep using the cream as instructed by your doctor or pharmacist for the best maintenance of results. Acne will worsen for a short period during the first few weeks of treatment as the cream clears the pores and reduces inflammation.

  • Can I use Differin Cream with other acne treatments?

Yes, Differin Cream can be used with other acne treatments, but it's important to be careful when using multiple medications. For instance, using Differin with products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or alpha hydroxy acids may increase skin irritation. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before combining treatments to avoid skin sensitivity or potential adverse reactions.

  • Is Differin Cream safe for use on sensitive skin?

Differin Cream can be applied to sensitive skin, although for the most sensitive skin, one should begin with a lower application strength to let the skin acclimate. With this product, one may feel dryness, redness, or peeling initially, and it can even be as early as the first few weeks of using the product. You may need to decrease the frequency of application or even consult a dermatologist on further procedures if irritation persists.

  • How do I apply Differin Cream?

    To apply Differin Cream:

    • Gently wash your face with a mild cleanser and blot your skin dry.
    • Squeeze a small amount of the cream (pea-sized) onto your fingertip.
    • Spread a thin layer over the affected areas of the skin, preferably at night before sleeping.
    • Avoid sensitive areas, such as eyes, mouth, and lips.
    • Thoroughly wash your hands after applying.
    • Begin with a once daily application and gradually increase as advised by your doctor.
  • Can I use Differin Cream during the day?

It is advisable to apply Differin Cream at night. This is because the cream makes your skin sensitive to sunlight, thereby increasing the chances of getting sunburned. Applying it at night reduces the exposure to harmful UV rays and allows the medication to act effectively while you sleep. When using Differin Cream/gel, always apply sunscreen during the day, even if you are indoors most of the time.

  • Can Differin Cream be applied outside the face?

Yes. Differin Cream can be applied to areas other than the face, which include the back, chest, or shoulders. However, applying it only on the affected body parts is in order to minimise irritation. All applications of Differin Cream on other parts of the body should be through your doctor's prescription.

  • What if Differin Cream gets into my eyes by accident?

If Differin Cream gets in your eyes, rinse the eyes with plenty of water. If you still have symptoms or are experiencing discomfort, talk to your doctor for further advice. Avoid using the cream close to the eyes or mucous membranes (inside the mouth, nostrils, etc.) so that it won't accidentally get in your eyes.

  • May I wear makeup over Differin Cream?

Absolutely, yes. You may use makeup following Differin Cream. You have to ensure the cream has dried into your skin completely before putting on makeup. You can apply non-comedogenic makeup, meaning the product won't block pores. Only use mild products on the face, avoiding the aggravation of acne and redness from irritated skin. Ensure that makeup is removed entirely before going to bed at night.

  • What if I miss a single application of Differin Cream?

If you forget to apply Differin Cream one night, just apply it the following evening at your usual time. Do not apply two doses in one night to make up for the missed application. Missing one application will not significantly alter the effect of the medicine, but regular daily application helps you achieve optimal results.

  • Can I use Differin Cream if I have eczema or other skin conditions?

Differin Cream is not for patients with severe eczema or other chronic skin diseases. The treatment can cause irritation and exacerbate the symptoms. Patients with sensitive skin conditions are recommended to seek medical advice from a healthcare provider before using Differin. He or she can prescribe an alternative treatment for a specific skin condition.

  • Can Differin Cream cause sunburn?

Yes, Differin Cream can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, leading to an increased risk of sunburn. To minimise this risk, avoid direct sun exposure and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, even when indoors or during cloudy days. Wearing hats and protective clothing can also help reduce sun exposure.

  • How often should I apply Differin Cream?

Differin Cream is usually applied once a day, typically before bedtime. In the beginning, your skin may react with some dryness or irritation, so it’s a good idea to start by applying the cream every other night until your skin builds tolerance. Gradually, you can increase the frequency to once a day as directed by your doctor.

  • How does Differin Cream work to treat acne?

Differin Cream works in the mechanism of regulating the turnover of cells on the skin. The active component adapalene prevents pores from being clogged up by dead skin, which is one of the main causes of acne. It helps to clear the current acne through the skin cell regeneration process, which allows new breakouts to form. It further has anti-inflammatory properties which reduce the redness and swelling associated with acne.

  • Is Differin Cream suitable for every kind of pimple?

Differin Cream is most helpful in mild and moderate acne, including blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples. It won't be this effective in very serious acne cases or cystic Acne. The doctor may consider some other medicines that need to be taken orally or along with Differin; your physician can suggest using topical medicines along with it to get better relief.

  • Can I use Differin Cream on acne scars?

Differin Cream is primarily used to treat active acne, but over time, it does help improve the appearance of the acne scars by removing dead skin cells. For severe or deep scars, you would need additional treatments like chemical peels, laser therapy, or other professional treatments.

  • How do I store Differin Cream?

Store Differin Cream at room temperature, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the tube's cap tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Use only by the expiration date indicated on the label to assure full potency and safety.

  • Can Differin Cream be used on other skin conditions besides Acne?

Differin Cream is specifically designed for the treatment of acne. It should not be used to treat other skin conditions like rosacea, psoriasis, or eczema unless you are advised by your doctor. If you have another skin condition, see your doctor for the proper treatment.
