What is Dalacin Cream?
Dalacin cream is a prescription-only vaginal cream used to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV), an infection caused by an imbalance in the natural bacteria of the vagina. This imbalance can lead to an overgrowth of certain bacteria, such as Gardnerella vaginalis.
The active ingredient in Dalacin cream is 2% clindamycin phosphate, an antibiotic that works to eliminate the bacteria responsible for BV.
It is important to note that Dalacin T, another product containing 1% clindamycin, is used to treat acne and is not suitable for BV. Ensure you use only Dalacin C (cream) for bacterial vaginosis.
How Does Dalacin Cream Work?
Dalacin cream works by halting the overgrowth of harmful bacteria, allowing the body to restore its natural bacterial balance. This treatment alleviates the symptoms of BV and prevents further bacterial proliferation.
Symptoms of BV
Thin, watery vaginal discharge, often white or grey in colour.
Strong fishy smell, especially after sexual intercourse.
Itching and soreness are not typical symptoms of BV.
Approximately 50% of women with BV do not experience any symptoms.
Dalacin cream is effective specifically for BV and does not treat other vaginal infections such as thrush, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or other bacterial infections.
Alternatives
Two antibiotics are commonly used to treat BV:
Clindamycin: Found in Dalacin cream, applied once daily for 7 days.
Metronidazole: Available as:
Vaginal gel (Zidoval): Applied once daily for 5 days.
Oral tablets: Taken as a single large dose or twice daily for 7 days.
If you’re unsure which treatment is most suitable for you, consult your doctor.
How to Prevent BV from Returning
The exact cause of BV is unclear, but the following tips may help reduce the risk of recurrence:
Avoid using perfumed soaps, shower gels, or bubble baths.
Refrain from using vaginal deodorants or washes.
Wash underwear with mild detergents.
Avoid smoking.
Opt for showers instead of baths.
Use water and plain soap to clean the genital area.
Dalacin cream is generally well-tolerated, but like any medication, it may cause side effects.
Common side effects include:
Cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix).
Vaginal thrush.
Abdominal cramps.
Vaginal discomfort or discharge.
If these side effects become too uncomfortable, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Rare but Serious Side Effects:
Severe or persistent diarrhoea. If this occurs, stop using Dalacin cream immediately and contact your GP.
Dalacin cream is supplied with disposable applicators for easy and hygienic application. The usual dose is one full applicator (approximately 5 grams) inserted into the vagina at bedtime for 3 to 7 days.
Instructions for Use:
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after use.
- Remove the cap from the tube and screw the applicator onto the tube.
- Squeeze the tube gently to fill the applicator. The plunger will stop moving when it contains the correct dose.
- Unscrew the applicator and replace the cap on the tube.
- Lie on your back and gently insert the applicator into the vagina as far as is comfortable.
- Push the plunger until all the cream is expelled.
- Dispose of the applicator in a waste bin—do not flush it down the toilet.
You should notice improvement in symptoms quickly, but it’s essential to complete the full treatment course, even if symptoms resolve early, to prevent recurrence. If symptoms persist beyond 7 days, consult your doctor for further advice.
