What is Colofac IBS?

Colofac IBS is a branded version of mebeverine, an antispasmodic medicine used to relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Each tablet contains 135 mg of mebeverine hydrochloride. It helps reduce abdominal cramps, bloating, and changes in bowel habits linked to IBS.

How Does Colofac IBS Work?

Mebeverine, the active ingredient in Colofac IBS, works directly on the smooth muscle of the gut. It relaxes muscle spasms without affecting normal bowel movements, easing pain and discomfort while maintaining healthy digestion.

Symptoms of IBS

IBS symptoms vary but may include:

Stomach cramps or abdominal pain that improves after passing stool
Bloating and excess wind
Diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating between both
A sense of incomplete bowel emptying
These symptoms can come and go, often triggered by diet, stress, or hormonal changes.

Lifestyle and dietary changes, such as following a low FODMAP diet, increasing fibre gradually, and limiting caffeine.
Over-the-counter medicines to ease diarrhoea or constipation.

Can Colofac IBS Be Purchased Over the Counter?

Yes. In the UK, Colofac IBS 135 mg tablets are available to buy from pharmacies without a prescription. A pharmacist will check your symptoms to ensure the treatment is suitable for you before supply.

• The usual adult dose is one 135 mg tablet, three times a day.
• Take the tablet about 20 minutes before a meal.
• Swallow whole with water. Do not chew, as this can reduce effectiveness.
• Once symptoms are under control, your doctor or pharmacist may suggest lowering the dose.
• Colofac IBS is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18.

Speak to your doctor or prescriber before taking Colofac IBS if you:
