What is Betnovate Ointment?

Betnovate ointment is a potent topical corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation, redness, and itching in skin conditions like eczema. The active ingredient, betamethasone valerate 0.1%, works by calming the immune response in the skin.

Ointments are greasier than creams, making them especially useful for dry, thick, scaly patches of eczema.

What is Betnovate Ointment Used For?

Eczema flare-ups (mild to moderate, pre-diagnosed): Helps bring down inflammation, itching, and redness.
Other steroid-responsive conditions: Dermatitis, psoriasis patches, lichen simplex, and similar conditions, when diagnosed by a doctor.

It is not suitable for fungal, viral, or bacterial skin infections, acne, or rosacea.

How Does Betnovate Ointment Work?

Betamethasone reduces over-activity of the immune system in the skin. This lowers inflammation and helps the skin heal.

As an ointment, it forms a protective greasy layer that locks in moisture and helps soften dry skin.

When Should I Use Betnovate Ointment?

Use it during short-term flare-ups of eczema that has already been diagnosed.

It should be applied sparingly and for no more than 2–4 weeks at a time, unless told otherwise by your doctor.

If your skin isn’t improving, is worsening, or looks infected (oozing, painful, spreading), contact your GP.

Who Should Use It?

Adults (18+) with a confirmed diagnosis of eczema or another steroid-responsive skin condition.
Those needing short bursts of treatment to settle flare-ups.

Who Should Not Use It?

Anyone allergic to betamethasone or the ointment’s ingredients (always check the PIL).
On untreated infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal).
On acne, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis.
On the face, eyelids, or genitals, unless specifically advised by a doctor.
Long-term without medical supervision — risk of skin thinning and other side effects.

Can I Get Betnovate Ointment Over the Counter?

No. Betnovate is a prescription-only medicine (POM) in the UK. A GP or telehealth clinician must prescribe it.

Alternative Treatments

Weaker steroid creams/ointments (e.g. hydrocortisone, clobetasone/Eumovate) for milder flare-ups
Emollients and moisturisers for daily prevention and skin barrier care
Non-steroidal topical treatments (calcineurin inhibitors) if steroids aren’t suitable
Referral to a dermatologist for severe or resistant eczema

How to Use Betnovate Ointment:

Wash and dry the affected area.
Apply a thin layer of ointment, just enough to cover the inflamed skin.
Gently rub in until absorbed.
Use once or twice daily as prescribed.
Reduce frequency as your eczema settles — then stop when the flare-up has cleared.
Do not use continuously for more than 2–4 weeks without review.

Active: Betamethasone valerate 0.1% w/w

Other ingredients (excipients): White soft paraffin, liquid paraffin

Because it contains paraffin, clothing or bedding in contact with treated skin can become flammable — keep away from naked flames and smoking.

Always check the patient information leaflet (PIL) in your pack for the full list of ingredients, especially if you have a history of allergies/sensitivities.

Mild and common:

Burning, stinging, or itching after application
Dryness or skin irritation

Possible with longer use:

Skin thinning (atrophy)
Stretch marks, visible blood vessels
Pigment changes (lighter or darker patches)

Rare but serious:

Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, blistering)
Eye problems (if used near the eyes)
Systemic effects (adrenal suppression, Cushing’s syndrome) if used excessively over large areas

If you develop swelling of your face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing, stop immediately and call 999/go to A&E.
If your eczema looks infected (red, hot, painful, with pus), contact your GP.
If your flare doesn’t improve after 2–4 weeks, speak to your GP or call NHS 111 for advice.

  • What is Betnovate ointment for?

It’s used to calm down flare-ups of eczema and other steroid-responsive skin problems. It helps bring down redness, itching, and swelling so the skin can heal.

  • How long can I use it for?

It is typically used for 2–4 weeks at most, applied once or twice a day. Once your skin improves, reduce use and stop. It’s not meant for long-term continuous use and follow your prescribers advice.

  • Can I use it on my face?

Generally no — the face is more sensitive and long-term steroid use there can cause thinning and other side effects. Only use on your face if your doctor has specifically advised it.

  • What if my skin gets worse instead of better?

If your eczema worsens, or the area becomes painful, oozing, or looks infected, stop the ointment and speak to your GP. If you’re unsure, you can call NHS 111. For swelling of the face or trouble breathing, go to A&E/call 999 straight away.

  • Can I use it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Betnovate should only be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding if a doctor decides it’s necessary. Always check with your GP first.

  • Can I use it on broken or infected skin?

No — don’t apply to broken, raw, or infected skin unless your doctor has told you to. It can make infections worse.

  • What if I forget to apply it?

Just put it on when you remember. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one — don’t apply extra.

  • Is ointment different from cream?

Yes. Ointments are greasier and better for dry, scaly patches of eczema. Creams are lighter and better for moist or weeping areas. Your GP or pharmacist will advise which is best for you.

  • Could it cause side effects?

Yes — mild irritation is common, but longer use can cause thinning or stretch marks. If you notice severe reactions, stop and seek advice. For breathing problems or facial swelling, call 999 immediately.

  • How do I check the ingredients?

The main ingredient is betamethasone valerate. Other ingredients include paraffin (which is flammable). Always read the patient information leaflet in your pack for the full list.
