What is Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer?

Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer is a topical antifungal medicine used to treat mild to moderate fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails. It contains amorolfine hydrochloride, which belongs to a class of antifungal medicines known as morpholines.

The lacquer works by penetrating deep into the nail plate and nail bed, disrupting the fungal cell membrane and preventing the fungus from growing and multiplying. This action helps eliminate the infection over time, allowing healthy nail tissue to grow back.

Amorolfine is convenient to apply—usually just once or twice a week—and dries into a hard, invisible film that remains active for up to seven days.

What is Amorolfine 5% Used For?

Amorolfine is commonly prescribed for:

Fungal Toenail Infections (Onychomycosis): Treats symptoms like discolouration, thickening, brittleness, and separation of the nail caused by fungal overgrowth.

Fungal Fingernail Infections: Helps clear up visible signs of infection and restore healthy nail growth.

Mild to Moderate Onychomycosis: Especially effective when less than two-thirds of the nail surface is affected without involvement of the nail matrix.

Amorolfine is suitable for both adults and elderly patients and is typically used over several months until the infected nail grows out completely.

How Does Amorolfine Work?

Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer containing amorolfine hydrochloride, which works through the following mechanisms:

Penetration: The lacquer soaks through the nail surface and reaches the underlying nail bed, where the fungus resides.

Disruption of Fungal Cell Membranes: Amorolfine inhibits ergosterol production, a key component of fungal cell membranes. This causes structural damage and ultimately kills the fungus.

Long-lasting Action: A single application remains effective in the nail for up to 7 days, reducing the need for frequent reapplication and ensuring ongoing protection.

This antifungal activity helps stop the infection from spreading to other nails or people, while allowing new, uninfected nail tissue to grow out gradually.

When is Amorolfine Prescribed?

Your GP or prescriber may recommend Amorolfine if:

You have signs of a mild to moderate fungal nail infection affecting one or more nails.

The infection does not involve the nail root (matrix) or more than two-thirds of the nail.

You prefer a topical treatment rather than oral antifungal tablets.

You are looking for a treatment that is easy to apply and integrates into your weekly routine.

You have previously experienced side effects with systemic (oral) antifungal medications.

If the infection is extensive or hasn’t improved after 6 months of use, your GP may consider oral treatments or combination therapy.

Can Amorolfine Be Purchased Over the Counter?

Yes. Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer is available over the counter in the UK, commonly sold under brand names like Curanail or Loceryl.

However, it is important to consult a pharmacist or GP before use, especially if:

You’re unsure whether your nail condition is fungal in origin.

You have diabetes, circulatory issues, or immune suppression.

You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Early intervention and consistent application are key for optimal results.

Alternative Medications

If Amorolfine isn’t suitable or effective, your GP may recommend one of the following:

Terbinafine Tablets: A systemic oral antifungal effective against stubborn or deep-seated infections. Not suitable for patients with liver issues.

Itraconazole Capsules: Used in pulse therapy to treat more resistant fungal infections or those affecting multiple nails.

Curanail: A branded over-the-counter version of Amorolfine 5%, typically used in mild cases.

Loceryl: Another brand containing Amorolfine 5%, sometimes offered in larger pack sizes for multiple nails.

Nail Removal Kits + Antifungal Creams: In severe cases, partial nail removal combined with topical antifungals like bifonazole cream may be considered.

For best results, antifungal treatment should be paired with good nail hygiene, avoiding damp footwear, and disinfecting nail tools.

How to Apply Amorolfine 5% Nail Lacquer:

Start by filing the affected nail(s) using the disposable nail file provided to remove dead or thickened parts of the nail.

Clean the nail surface with an alcohol wipe or cleansing pad to remove dust and oils.

Using the reusable applicator brush, apply a thin, even layer of lacquer over the entire affected nail, including the underside of the nail tip if possible.

Allow the lacquer to dry naturally. This usually takes about 3 minutes.

Avoid washing the treated nail for at least 6 hours after application to allow the medicine to absorb fully.

After use, clean the applicator brush with the same alcohol wipe to avoid reinfection.

Dosage Instructions:

Apply once or twice a week, as advised by your GP or pharmacist.

Continue treatment for 6 to 12 months, or until a healthy, clear nail has completely grown out.

Do not skip applications, as this may prolong the infection or lead to a relapse.

Treatment should be consistent and uninterrupted for best results.

Tip: Use a separate file for infected nails to avoid spreading the infection to healthy ones.
    • Clean the nail with the cleaning swab supplied.
